SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
Biologists at the University of California are sequencing Drosophila (fruity fly) samples. The genome is approximately 1.2 x 108 base pairs. One lane of paired-end, 75bp data from an Illumina® GA2 machine gives about 25X coverage of a genome. Roughly 35 million pairs of reads per lane or 2* 75 *35e6 = 5.25 e10 base pairs of data. Researches sequence three lanes per sample. Using a custom developed analysis pipeline a single sample can be processed in less than 12 hours. According to the Biologists this analysis includes much more than performing simple alignments.
